We're often asked if we do cooking classes at Sly's. With the restaurant open 7 days, and our tiny kitchen, it's difficult if not impossible for us to do cooking classes. We've done a few, like at Rusack Winery in Santa Ynez, and for the Santa Barbara Newcomers and we enjoy them, but sadly they are few and far between. So when we came across an article in the recent fall issue of Santa Barbara Magazine we thought it was a good time to pass on information to our readers.
SO, here it is - who's doing cooking classes in the Carpinteria/Santa Barbera area these days.

Includes trips to the Fish Market and Farmer's Market, as well as a cheese shop and a bakery. After collecting ingredients, Laurence and the lucky students cook the meal together and then enjoy their work and local wine. Pascale Groom, cookbook author and mediterranean diet proponent often has classes that feature seasonal produce from Santa Barbara's wonderful farmer’s markets. Most series will comprise 6 to 8 different lunchtime classes. We're told that the classes will feature 1 1/2 hour to 2-hours of cooking with student participation followed by lunch.

Finally, Chef Michael Hutchings has a wonderful catering operation and has been know to do rather extraordinary classes on a custom basis for groups and for corporate events. Michael has more more experience than anyone around, having been among other things, Sous Chef for the three star Michelin Restaurant Le Gavroche in London. ( disclaimer: Michael and I did our apprenticeships together some 35 years ago, and have worked together and been friends ever since.) This guy knows his stuff and loves sharing his skills with others.
